According to the San Diego Police Department, suspicious activity was reported by neighbors to 911. Just before 7 p.m., officers arrived at the home in question, near the intersection of Summerview Court and Jade Coast Drive, roughly half a mile from Mira Mesa High School.
The officers were not prepared for what they would find: a woman in her 70s, already deceased, and a man in his ‘60s, critically wounded by a bullet to his torso. Paramedics took the man to a hospital, where he remains today. The names of the deceased woman and injured man are being withheld pending notifications to their extended family.
SDPD Homicide said there are many questions surrounding the Aug. 7th attack; detectives are in the process of conducting an investigation, which will include collecting surveillance camera footage from neighbors to help identify a suspect and establish a timeline. SDPD investigators have stated that they don’t believe there was a break-in or threat to the public.
Located northeast of the University of California, San Diego campus, Mira Mesa is a middle-class suburb, next to Scripps Ranch, known for being safe and stable. It is home to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar (MCAS Miramar) and a large Filipino-American community. Homicides in Mira Mesa are considered an anomaly. In fact, it’s been almost four years since the last murder in Mira Mesa, which occurred Oct. 5, 2022. At around 9:30 a.m., San Diego police responded to gunfire on the 10900 block of Deering Street, only to find 18-year-old Brian Mendoza-Camacho dead from a gunshot wound. Three months later, two individuals were arrested for the murder.
In June 2024, a man later identified as Cole Klemke stabbed a pregnant woman at a drive-thru ATM near the Mira Mesa Boulevard Target. The victim survived the attack and the suspect pleaded guilty to attempted murder. Klemke was sentenced today to ten years in prison.
Last week’s Mira Mesa murder occurred less than two weeks after a man was struck and killed by a car in Mira Mesa. On July 25th, 60-year-old Samir Cesko was crossing the street outside of a crosswalk on Camino Ruiz when he was knocked to the ground by a vehicle. After an investigation, SDPD ruled it a traffic fatality, concluding that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol and did not intend to harm the victim.
According to law enforcement data, Mira Mesa has a safety grade of A-. Its overall crime index is 51, which is 49% below the national average of 100. Mira Mesa is rated safer than 61% of neighborhoods in San Diego.
Editor’s Questions: So, what is your speculation? What happened last week in that Mira Mesa garage? If it wasn’t a break-in – and there’s no sign of forced entry – then what is the most likely scenario? Let me know in the comments.
