Here’s some breaking San Diego news >> Yesterday, the San Diego City Council’s Rules Committee unanimously approved an ordinance to guarantee free parking at beach and bay lots! ????
What prompted this? ?
During the 2027 budget negotiations, four San Diego city council members floated the idea of charging for parking at the city’s beaches and bays. The revenue raised would have been used to reduce the budget deficit. ??
This brought back bad muscle memory >> Mayor Gloria’s failed effort to introduce paid parking at Balboa Park was a PR disaster, all over the San Diego news. ????
To pre-empt it from happening again, Councilmembers Raul Campillo and Joe La Cava introduced an ordinance that would prohibit paid parking at the city’s beaches and bays for the next 10 years. ???
Campillo said the ordinance would “make sure the city learns from the lessons that the parking fees at Balboa Park pointed out.” ????
Where do you come down? ??
Is protecting access to our beaches and bays more or less important than generating parking revenue for deficit reduction? ??
